The Massachusetts Albanian American Society "BESA" was founded in November 2006 as an independent and not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting the well-being and progress of the Albanian-American community of Massachusetts.
Over the past ten years, MAASBESA has grown into one of the most active and highly respected Albanian-American organizations in the United States. We have held hundreds of cultural events to promote Albanian art, music, film, and history, and helped over ten Albanian children with serious medical problems to receive medical care here in Boston. We would like to thank all of the 54 people who have served on the MAASBESA Board of Directors and Advisory Board over the past ten years and contributed to its success.
Shkolla "Besa" has been operating since 2006, educating children of Albanian backgrounds, in speaking, reading and writing. It started in an effort to maintain and develop Albanian language and culture within the community. Now, the school includes Albanian language classes, dance classes, and mathematics classes, and serves, on average, 25-30 students per year.
The school's mission is to keep Albanian language and heritage alive in the Albanian community in Massachusetts by promoting and fostering the students' connection with their forefathers' culture, history, and traditions. Thus preparing our children to not only be members of the local Albanian community, but also citizens in a global world, with the ability to carry and communicate the values of their motherland.
The school has held its classes at Boston University, Saint George Albanian Orthodox Cathedral, Holy Trinity Albanian Orthodox Church, and in its current home at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. We would like to thank all of the people who have been teachers, coordinators, and volunteers for the school over the past decade
The Bashkimi Dance Group was established in 1996 by the well-known Albanian choreographer Bashkim Braho . It is the premiere Albanian folk dance troupe of Massachusetts, dedicated to keeping alive the tradition of Albanian dance and music in the heart of the Albanian communities in Massachusetts and across the United States.
In 2010, Bashkimi Dance joined with the MAASBESA, and together organized the first Albanian Folk Festival in Massachusetts with dance groups and Albanian folk performers from Boston, New York, and Detroit. This merger also gave birth to the Albanian Dance Classes for Children under the direction of Bashkim Braho.
Since its inception, the troupe has been composed of Albanian students and graduates from various universities in Boston who consistently won first prize at the New York Albanian Festival. We would like to thank all of the fifty dancers who have been members of the Bashkimi Dance Group over the past twenty years, and contributed to its success and the cultural enrichment of the local Albanian-American community.
