Early Life: Bashkim Braho was born on March 20, 1948, in Tirana, the capital city of Albania. His exceptional talent was evident from a young age, as he captivated family members with his lively dance moves. His sister would accompany him by playing the daire, akin to a tambourine, while Bashkim performed for relatives, experiencing the joy of an appreciative audience for the first time. He completed his primary education at “Kosova” grade school, where he participated in an amateur dance group. He furthered his studies at the Lycée Artistic “Jordan Misja.”
Dancing Career: In 1962, Braho enrolled in the esteemed School of Music and Dance in Tirana, Albania. During his time there, he was mentored by the renowned Albanian dance instructor Gezim Kaceli, who had trained in Moscow for five years. Braho enjoyed a distinguished 26-year career as a professional dancer with the Theater of Opera and Ballet in Tirana. His prolific artistic journey included international performances across sixteen countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia:
1970: Dijon Festival, France, where EFDS received the “Gold Medal.” 1971: Dance tour in Kosova, marking his debut as a soloist. 1974: Dance tour in China and Korea. 1976: Dance tour in Sweden and Norway. 1977: Dance tour in Greece. 1978: Dance tour in Greece. 1979: Dance tour in Turkey. 1980: Dance tour in France. 1981: Dance tour in Greece. 1982: Dance tour in Switzerland. 1983: Dance tour in Germany. 1985: Dance tour in Italy. 1986: Dance tour in Italy. 1987: Dance tour in Italy. 1988: Dance tour in Italy. 1989: Dance tour in Italy.
Choreography: In 1989, Braho founded and led ‘Krahu i Shqiponjes’ (The Eagle’s Wing), a folk ensemble that garnered significant acclaim both in Albania and internationally. This dance group showcased ancient Albanian folklore through numerous performances in Croatia (1993), Turkey (1995), and Spain (1996), where they received the “Medal of Honor” from Spain’s Art Council.
Across the Atlantic: Relocating to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1995 did not mark the end of his artistic journey; rather, it provided a renewed beginning. This transition led to the founding of the Bashkimi Dance, which, under his guidance and management, continues to showcase dances from various regions of Albania. Noteworthy among its performances is the tribute presented in honor of former US President Bill Clinton on June 9, 2003. Additionally, a significant accomplishment includes participation in the annual Balkan Festival in Natick, MA, as well as the yearly Albanian Festival in New York. Bashkim Braho stands as a prominent figure among those who contribute to the promotion of Albanian art globally.
